This species from Mexico and Guatemala named in honour of Dr Sprekel a German botanist and commonly called Jacobean Lily. This bulb produces long green upright leaves like a daffodil, from which emerges a single stem. The stem produces a large scarlet (rarely white) six segmented ‘orchid like’ bloom. Bulbs prefer a sunny well drained position with plenty of Summer water and preferably dryer over their Winter dormancy. We have found that even in a pot of six bulbs each bulb will flower when it is ready over a prolonged Summer. They will benefit from top dressing twice during the growing season and a small amount of potash in October would be advisable. They are a truly stunning old fashioned favourite!
