This genus of about 13 species often referred to as 'Harlequin Flowers' are endemic to the cape region of South Africa and have been cultivated for over 200 years. They are all perennial corms that grow during the wet winter season, flower in spring and survive dormant over the summer. They come in a wide range of colors and most like a sunny well drained spot. Very similar growing conditions to that of Ixias.
